So like, I'm a Star Wars fan, right? I was really into the EU stuff, especially the Yuuzhan Vong stuff, and I have put a frankly unreasonable amount of effort into making sure that I have an Actual Good Version of the original trilogy available for peo...

@noracodes I *constantly* wonder that. Like, the movies aren't even slightly subtle about it, the Stormtroopers are space Nazis.
On one hand, I love that the series deals pretty plainly with the effects of fascism, even in its more kid-oriented forms (eg Bad Batch).
On the other, I don't get why it's at all acceptable, much less appealing, to cosplay as a space Nazi or to be surrounded by people cosplaying the same.

@noracodes (Don't even get me started on games that treat the rebels and the Empire as co-equal PvP teams. It's not fucking red vs blue, for gods' sake.)

@noracodes I think that there's a complexity in that Disney is just... the evil corp, and wants to be that way.
the weird deep centrism Disney has to Star Wars makes my skin crawl

@xgranade I could even see an asymmetric, Natural Selection-esque team tactics shooter being really fun, with the Imperial team being supported by tons of bots while the ARR team has to do, y'know, guerilla warfare stuff. You could do something interesting with that.
But yeah, Battlefront's "park two different shaped starcruisers next to each other, each equally equipped and crewed" thing is wild

@silverwizard That's true. We never saw a Lucasfilm-designed Star Wars immersive experience or theme park because, for all his faults, at least Lucas kind of understands what he created

@noracodes I think it's partly Disney and partly because for a lot of people, being part of a dystopia run by fascists has just become part of the hero fantasy
they don't come off as being any more realistic than, like, meeting Jafar or what'shername the evil fairy from Snow White

@amaranth Fair enough, yeah. I wonder if being a fan who's aware of the context around the films actually makes it more jarring.

Since I realize some may not know: Star Wars (1977) is about how the American military is evil, terrorism is good, and Richard Nixon is a bad person. It's barely subtext, and probably feels much more obscure for folks my age than it did for our parents. Lucas has spoken about this on numerous occasions (see https://www.history.com/news/the-real-history-that-inspired-star-wars ; yes, linking history.com is gauche, but this is genuinely the best collection of Lucas quotes on this topic I've found)

@noracodes I mean I don't think you're supposed to like the Stormtroopers.
You're supposed to feel like a Rebel or smuggler getting away with something under their noses. -
@ak Well, there *is* a First Order storyline. But even if there weren't... do they need to be at dinner?
