How do individuals on the #Fediverse respond to the presence of Mutual Aid requests on the timeline? I have seen some fighting between people who support Mutual Aid and people who want it removed by #Moderation, so let's see what individuals are doing.

Finally, what is the general #opinion of people on the network of the Mutual Aid stuff? Some people have claimed they think it's the worst thing on the timeline, others have held it up as an example of all the great things Fedi can be.

@Raccoon Thx for doing this tho I suspect the results could change a lot based on the definition used.

If the survey is defining #mutualaid as #charity or #donation then that's different than more traditional definitions of mutual aid like, for example, a reciprocal exchange of services for a common benefit.

That's a good point I guess. I generally mean the way it's used as a hashtag on this network. I should go edit to clarify.

An interesting result I am seeing so far is that more than a quarter of the people responding to the first one say that they don't know enough about what it is to make a judgment. That in itself is a really good data point, and perhaps it warrants something like a PSA and/or FediTips post in the near future.

@Raccoon my criteria/concern here is not about activity level…it is about legitimacy. I’ve got limited resources and I don’t have any idea how to vet requests (other than the orthogonal metric of activity level). I have some personal acquaintances that would totally abuse mutual aid if they knew they could…but I don’t have any sense of trust measurement with people on Fedi.

That's a concern I have as well. It's one thing when someone I've seen other posts from and am aware of is asking for money, and I know they contribute content to the network in general, but it's another when I see people whose entire timeline seems to just be a copy pasted story.

I don't know those people, I don't have any way to vet them as actually needing the money: we've had a couple cases of known scammers using popular donation hashtags, and I'm sure at least one person has thought to post fake stories under fake accounts with this hashtag.
