Honestly, the character limit is somewhat arbitrary. I understand that really high character limits can mess up the display on some interfaces, but theoretically, the protocol itself doesn't have a limit.

The point of instances having short character limits is mainly so people use it for microblogging, as opposed to full-length blogging.
