i can't possibly point out enough just how much of a dumpster fire #fediblock is honestly, the extremely hostile attitudes of some people on there towards anyone with differing opinions make the fediverse worse for everyone

One issue not addressed is incompatability between software on some issues.
Calckey Social blocked Mastodon App UK over a moderation issue.
Turned out that Mastodon could not read the longer message report format used by Calckey.
Took months to sort out and the bad feeling remained. -

@AnguaDelphine moderation issues are a reason to limit instances, not block them
this way potentially harmful posts don't pollute timelines, and people who want to follow/interact with others on that poorly-moderated instance can still do so
everyone wins

@soop oh, you'd rather block an instance for yourself? Go right ahead.
Though, BeAware that in that case, they'd still be able to see, interact, and reply to your posts, you just won't be able to see them.
User domain blocks are just a mute.

@soop @tchambers counterpoint: racism.
without reply controls,
some racist replies to a Black person's thread (in follower-only mode),
most white people don't see it (and think everything on fedi is fine),
and fewer people are following the jerk to see and report itif you could limit who could reply (or limit them to only be able to publicly reply), that would be grand
so... it's bad in both directions. fediblock is the tool we have. it's got a wide blast radius, and it's slow to act.
asking individual users to manage the hate speech that gets sent to them is really privileged

This is why it's a good idea to reach out to other instance staff periodically, if you are having an issue with them, and the issue isn't something they seem to be actively promoting. Quite a few times I've had conversations with the staff of other servers who we were considering blocking or who had blocked us, and it turned out we could resolve the issue in very short order. Often it's just things that aren't getting noticed by moderation for whatever reason, but would have been dealt with if they were.We really need to be more active about talking to each other.

@risottobias @soop @tchambers
As much as I think reply controls would be great, I think the reason they haven't been implemented is because it's much harder to enforce across the network. You can easily write the software to not send private messages to servers that don't need them, but it requires the software of the other server to not allow people to just reply to posts they're not supposed to be able to.That said, it should probably be implemented anyway, just so it's in the software and could start proliferating as part of the standard, and would have the added bonus that trolls would be less likely to show up on instances that support it.

@soop
This is why I always tell people they need to take everything on that tag with a handful of salt: it's a great way to know about serious problem instances, but not everyone is going to agree with everyone who posts on there about the reason they give for blocking, and people using it as a substitute for the report button is definitely an issue. -

ThatOneCalc did try to get an Admin Instance going for that purpose; but I think that was just for Calckey when it was morphing into Firefish.
It gets most dispiriting when Admins have blazing rows across the Fediverse.
I really appreciate the Moderators, tough thankless job for the love of it.

Always glad to have people thanking us.Personally, I try to stay out of these admin level conflicts: we usually don't block either party unless there is some sort of serious infraction going on. So like, the only one I can think of I've been engaged with recently was with Linux Rocks, and I think the reason for my involvement in that was obvious from the public conversations I was having with their admins. (We are still accepting account migrations from them)
Too many of them seem to be about lower level issues that have been escalated to big public fights, when perhaps one side should have figured out how to deescalate them. Too many people seem to not know how to work together as a community to focus on a common goal.

whether it's enforced at a malicious node isn't my problem
it's whether kind nodes enforce it.
and then polite clients (like @pachli ) could honor the setting and go "now hold up, it won't do anything to reply to this post, they won't see it.
