I have to say this, if you're against accessibility features just because they have "AI" in the name, then you're an idiot and being very ableist.

Please quantify:
How many hundreds of acres of forest were destroyed to make the training data for this AI?
How much of the 1.6c climate devastation is responsible for this AI?
Even the ADA states a "reasonable accomidation". How much climate devastation is 'reasonable'?

1. Training data isn't created by destroying forests. That actually results in overall *less* information existing.
2. Near nada. We'll see the results of AI on January 1st, 2031, when we'll be able to compare the average temperature of the 2020s and the 2010s.
3. Reasonability is a function that receives the amount of "climate devastation", in specific units. Running an AI model on your local PC takes nearly no energy, as it is run on NPUs, units that are meant specifically for executing a huge amount of repetitive calculations in the background, that is, with the lowest energy usage possible. Such algorithms might even *lower* energy usage compared to traditional, CPU/GPU algorithms. But you can't even measure the relative energy usage of local NPUs compared to CPUs and GPUs. But overall, it's less, by nature, and computers have been getting more and more efficient lately, regardless.

@crankylinuxuser @Jessica so, to recap, local NPUs are extremely efficient by nature, and you have no idea how much energy they consume compared to a CPU/GPU, nor will you ever be able to.
Running a CPU supercomputer is as energy wasting as an NPU supercomputer. The problem is economics, not the tech.

@[email protected] @[email protected] speech recognition has existed since the 70's it doesn't take that much computational power.

@Jessica @crankylinuxuser I'm aware, this is about a lot more than just speech recognition tho.

@[email protected] @[email protected] this includes speech to text. they've just existed for a long time because it's benefit is obvious

@Jessica @crankylinuxuser what I meant was, but why not show them how all their points are just wrong.
