Tumblr is absolutely my favorite social media site that I never use.

@deadsuperhero @stefan Would be a dream come true, honestly. I think a federated Tumblr would resolve so many of the issues classic Tumblr users left the platform for.
I never used Tumblr actively because I never found my community there. The UX was always tempting, but the content didn't click. But if I had a cross-platform network then, well, we're in business.

@quillmatiq Yeah, don't see much coverage of this, but:

@thisismissem Ah, I see. Well, still love this feature, it makes social media feel a lot more social.

@quillmatiq @stefan My wife loves Tumblr, and usually collects posts to share with me at the end of the day. There’s a lot of amazing stuff there, it just requires skillful digging.
Might be the easiest way to get her on the Fediverse, tbh.

@deadsuperhero @stefan You're going to make me want to try Tumblr again, aren't you

As a frequent tumblr user, I'd argue that none of that is what caused people to leave, afaik, the newly launched communities feature has been a flop too.
Instead it's management's consistent attitude towards queer identities that drove people from the site.
I do think we'll see a federated tumblr-like app grow in the future, but for now none of them seem wildly adopted, and I don't think Automattic cares about the platform to invest in making it federated.

Instead the move to wordpress backend is purely about cost cutting (less developers to work on that codebase), as far as I can see.
e.g., when they ran a survey before the launch of their new communities feature, they actually omitted LGBTQ+ from the list of interests, instead it was all "arts, sport, photography, fandoms"

@thisismissem @deadsuperhero @stefan What I was trying to say was that folks who don't agree with the direction the platform has taken can set up shop for their communities. I hope we start seeing more Fedi platforms with a Tumblr-inspired UX either way!

@stefan I don't think it's a big deal to mention your "via", and users who receive few interactions would actually be happy. I'd do it, and just refrain to do so if someone complains about it.
There's not going to be one right way to do it anyway. Some people love receiving a lot of likes, and some threaten to block those who "spam their notes". Not to mention those who think Liking without Reblogging is like a crime against humanity.
But still. I love Tumblr always an interesting place, and there's still some old-school-web vibe, in spite of being mostly inhabited by people who are probably too young to have experienced it. -
@yhancik Yeah, that's kind of my thinking. I'd think people appreciate getting credit for something they shared, or getting a shoutout for their newsletter, or blog, if that's where I found a good article.
