On the topic of sharing articles on social media, I think it would be great if we had a dedicated meta tag for text that gets prefilled.

Let me see if I can explain better. 1/n

I have a "share with the fediverse" button on https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/world-blog-day-2024/.
When clicking it, the text that ends up in the post compose field is just the title of the page and the URL.

There is not much of a point in using the description or og:description meta tag, because that shows up in the preview card on most platforms. So it would be useful to use something like
<meta property="og:snippet" content="I agree with Stefan, let's bring back the World Blog Day!" />

Does this make sense? Is it useful?

oh, like: the share button on your site prefills it to whatever you on your site set it to? Could you than provide multiple share buttons with different "share opinions". XD
Oh no, that sounds confusing but also interesting.

@clear_dusk Yes, exactly! And I suppose you could, but that really could be a bit confusing and clutter up your page.
Either way, my sharing button also prefills any selected text on the page, which helps, I just need to make this feature easier to discover.

@stefan I’ll have to check this out on a computer, rather than my phone, because that sounds like a great button to offer.

@stefan
Looks like a lot of moving parts to set up. -

@gdinwiddie Are you referring to the amount of HTML that goes on the page?
https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-share-button/#how-to-use
Yes, I don't disagree with you. Coincidentally, I was just replying to someone on here a moment ago about considering turning this into a web component to help isolate the styles from the rest of the page. That would also address this issue.
Appreciate the feedback!

@stefan
I was looking at the URL you shared before, https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/world-blog-day-2024/
It seemed like a bunch of JS, named element magic, and CSS were required. It might be a bunch of work to maintain. I find WordPress' use of CSS to be pretty opaque, anyway. I can't even find where to make small tweaks. -

@gdinwiddie Yes, a bit of a challenge for me here is that I need to maintain two versions, one for the WordPress plugin, which, when finished, will not rely on JavaScript, and will need all the standard HTML form elements to function.
The hosted version will require JavaScript to handle the detection of the fediverse platform based on the URL, so that one could be reworked as a web component with minimal HTML needed.
Either way, this is all work in progress, and I appreciate your feedback!
