Offsite Event at FOSDEM 2025…?
-
I have good news and bad news. Our Call for Participation for the Social Web track at FOSDEM 2025 was extremely successful; we had almost 40 submissions of great talks about Free and Open Source software for the Fediverse.
The bad news is that we’ve got only a 4 hours of time at FOSDEM, and we’ve been unable to allocate more time for the track.
So, right now, I’m looking for space in Brussels for additional space for an offsite event — “Social Web After Hours”, let’s call it — to run on Friday night Jan 31 or Sunday night Feb 2.
If you’re aware of a meeting space in Brussels, close to the centre or to the FOSDEM venue, that would accommodate an audience of 50-100 people and has screens for presentations, available for maybe 2 hours, please let me know. It would be great to have some Social Web discussions on the FOSDEM fringe.

@evanprodromou I sometimes think that the ratio of sessions submitted to time allocated at FOSDEM should be part of the measure of community health.
I hope that all who submit a session that are not fortunate to host it at FOSDEM find some way to present it somehow or somewhere else - their contribution still has value.

@evanprodromou Are there funds for venue rental? Several day before events use space in hotels near Grand Place: Novotel Bruxelles Grand Place, DoubleTree Brussels, and Hilton Bruxelles Grand Place are popular venues.
You might get some venue ideas from the 2023 and 2024 Fringe pages:

@evanprodromou ...and having clicked the link, I see you already linked to this year's Fringe event, so I can probably assume you already saw the 2023 and 24 pages.

@evanprodromou The "After Hours" talk is going to be pretty fantastic. We have a few great speakers already confirmed. It looks like we also got some overflow space in the BOF room for some lightning talks. There is going to be a lot going on at #FOSDEM for the #SocialWeb.

@dneary @evanprodromou I have, but this is helpful. I don't have a *tonne* of money, though. I've been looking at more, umm, community venues, but I'll try pricing these out.

#idea We sort of did that in 2012 at A La Mort Subite. Ah... Fond memories... Sadly I'll be missing FOSDEM this year, as well.

@evan @evanprodromou There are some hacker spaces that might be open to offering some space! I will poke around and see if I can get you a name and address.

@evan @evanprodromou No idea if they will do a free space, but the ICAB Incubator is here: https://incubators.brussels/icab/
