Basically: I have a heavily modded version that works great on my desktop, but due to reasons, it won’t launch in Game Mode. It’s a downgraded GOG copy, because the Steam version forces you to stay on Next Gen, and some of my mods won’t work there. Steam will try to update it every time you run the game.
Okay.
So, after doing an elaborate dance with Heroic Launcher, winetricks, and Proton GE, I can get the game to work in Desktop Mode. But, it falls to detect controller input. Trying to launch it through Game Mode leads to the game and modding tool to never launch, I guess because I’m using external Proton, which is a no-no?
It’s just confounding. I feel like I’m so close to having a playable game, but something is out of alignment.

I guess I could try adding the game to Steam, and then forcing that to use Steam’s own native Proton in Game Mode?
The thing that makes me slightly uncomfortable is that I’ve already gone though all this effort to put things together. Switching prefixes means I might have to move everything around to get it to work.
One of these days, I’ll actually play this damn game

I’m happy to report that I finally got this to work! Turns out, Game Mode on the Steam Deck really doesn’t like it if you try to load a separate version of Proton that lives inside of a Flatpak application.
Now, the only thing to do is debug what mods are preventing the game from loading one of my saves…
