If you feel like you've been running on fumes for a long time, you almost certainly have ... so a hiatus from a completely unsustainable situation makes a lot of sense even if it's not what you had hoped for.
No matter how you feel though, you *haven't* been failing. You and the rest of the team have done a lot of valuable work, and made a lot more progress than many fledgling publications with bigger budgets. It's really challenging trying to get something off the ground, and you've got a good base to resume if and when you decide that makes sense.

@jdp23 Thank you, Jon, that means a lot. It’s some of the most challenging work I’ve ever done, and I still have a lot to learn about managing a team and doing day-to-day newsroom stuff. I think this is ultimately the right move, though stepping away is a weird and almost deflating feeling.
I think the biggest thing to learn is to how to let go. My worst habit is trying to do too much all by myself, because it “feels” quicker and more direct. In reality, I’ve been too reactive for too long.

@[email protected] yeah I can totally see how it's weird and deflating ... you've learned a lot, made some great connections, and created a body of work, but it's so easy to focus on what *hasn't* happened (yet). And I too am not great at letting go, so I totally get that part!
