It has begun... Chantal Hébert on CBC Radio-Canada has floated the idea of Prime Minister Trudeau proroguing Parliament to avoid a snap election, having his 'walk in the snow' moment this winter, and resigning, so that the Liberal Party of Canada can have a leadership race and new Leader by Spring 2025.Would a new Leader be enough for the Liberals to hold onto power in the next Federal Election?

@sleepy62 I don't think there is any such thing as “not qualified to vote". If you're a citizen, you're qualified.
I always tell people if they are worried about how or who to choose, just go by how the person makes you feel, either your local candidate or the leader.
Everyone is qualified to make that kind of choice!

@chris I would like to see the LPC win (mostly because they aren't a bunch of crypto fascists), but I really don't see how a new leader would turn things for them.

@shadowpages @chris I think, as with Biden stepping aside, there’s ways it goes well and ways it goes badly. You’re not derisking - as long as our media environment is laced with algorithmic feeds and billionaires controlling editorial boards you can’t - but you’re trading out risks.
Trudeau at least is a known quality; people are willing to say they hate him, but how much do they mean it? And he’s very good at campaigning; he’s good on the trail.
-
@shadowpages @chris on the other hand swapping out Trudeau as leader could get you someone who’s more generally appealing, able to make the case for course corrections, and able to appeal better to the young. It seems to have worked for Harris.
But you could also get an Ignatieff or a Dion, a dour stick who appeals to big dollar donors and no one else.
-
@shadowpages @chris it’s also not clear how much the fall elections change things; if the NDP somehow holds on in BC and carries Saskatchewan, and the Liberals win in NB - an unlikely sweep but not impossible - you go from Trudeau facing constant pressure on his right from a majority of provinces to pressure on his left. Or if Ford or Houston calls and loses a snap election.

I don’t think Permanent Residents are allowed to vote at national elections. Are they?Edit: only Canadian citizens are eligible to vote in national elections.

Unfortunately I think that proroguing would just be ammo for Poillievre.
It might give them time to get a new leader, but that new leader will be Kim Campbelled.
