Some of our browser competitors are all in on Crypto. We are not.

@jon Put the call out for how much support you need. In this day of enshittification of the internet at large, companies who stick their necks out to do right by their users will probably be embraced by their community. Note the offers to donate more by @breadcat and @MarcusAnthonyCyganiak I'll add my own two cents if those would help.

@MarcusAnthonyCyganiak @jon @breadcat @Vivaldi It's at the bottom of this page, requires a Vivaldi account to log in, and uses Stripe as payment processor; https://vivaldi.net/contribute/

Kari'bokareplied to Jon S. von Tetzchner last edited by@jon Would it be in the realm of possibilities to have a Vivaldi Gecko someday?
-

@kariboka , I think it is unlikely. It would require a lot of work and it would not make Vivaldi better.
When we evaluated what our options were, we looked at Chromium and Gecko for the most part. We know that starting from scratch would not be feasible for us, having done that before and knowing what it entails.
We found Chromium to be the safer bet.

The login is only required if you want to give a monthly donation. This is to be able to manage the donation.

Every donation helps. We particularly appreciate monthly donations, but they all help.

@jon crypto isnt inherently bad, but it's way too nascent/scammy (for now), so i appreciate keeping it at an arm's distance. at the very least, integrating any sort of crypto features would be a waste of dev resources

@HalleAndert @jon That it is closed source is my concern? Unless I can built the browser my self it's hard to trust. Further even if there's a source dump from some parts of the browser that doesn't change how open the browser is.

@HalleAndert @jon At least I'm trying to use completely free software. Point being that
are plenty of free browsers out there. Not just because I wouldn't don't trust binary built by someone else but also to be able to rebuild
the application whenever I need to.
I use Firefox. -

@jon
As long as it's not an imposition or you're secretly mined, it doesn't bother me.But it bothers me that Vivaldi is not open source. That's more worrying, the rest is auditable.

@thaodan @jon Although Firefox is a free and open source browser, @mozilla is completely financially dependent on #Google.
I also like using #FOSS, but I am not a hardliner. There is too much good software that is not open source. @Vivaldi is by far the best #browser in my opinion. I simply can no longer do without its advantages.
My tip to you is to simply take a look at Vivaldi and give the browser a chance. Maybe you will like the browser. :tony_wee:
