Heeeeeeey linux cats!
I would like to learn how to do kernel work and closer to the grain hardware work. Anyone know of any reasonably-priced device (wifi card? PCI-E card? even if it's a laptop, so long as it's relatively inexpensive for the whole shebang) that oh my god no one gives a shit about enough to write a driver but it would be super cool if it did work?
If you know of any listing of anything of this type or anything, that would be really helpful. I dunno what my price point is but given that it's education to increase my skillset for employability (and to possibly help stave off more compute lockdown in the future) I do have some budget for it. I'm not really a hardware kitten so I'm not quite sure where to begin to look for this kind of info.
Boosts very much appreciated!

("why not start with something you own?", you may ask, unaware that I have the good fortune to have everything I own work with Linux).

@aud V4L2 driver for cheap USB thermal cams like Seek. Requires RE'ing the protocol though I think.

@[email protected] That's even better in this case because ... uh, like, 9 times out of 10 how I go about "engineering" is basically hacking and reverse engineering until I understand it well enough to do it "correctly".

@aud If you'd like somthing that works, but not correctly, (iommu=soft is required), look for a PCIe to USB 3 card that uses the VL805 chip. Perhaps you could track down the issue and write a fix.

@[email protected] Something... like this, for instance? https://www.amazon.com/PCI-Express-4ports-Expansion-4xusb3-0-adapter/dp/B074SZ9QZS

@[email protected] ooof! Alright, I admit that I didn't expect $150+ based on you saying they were cheap. That's not impossible but maybe more than I want to spend on that particular device since I have some... mixed feelings about improving the use of cameras like that.
