anyway, it’s true, i bought one of the damnable things
i needed to replace my car *now*, and CCS is obsolete, and having an obsolete connector is going to increasingly suck over time
so that meant a NACS car, that i could buy *now* and not in 1-10 months from now (real quotes from real dealers when asked about inventory!!) in Seattle.
that meant buying one of the damnable things, because literally everyone else that wasn’t selling a nissan leaf (i’m sorry, but fuck chademo lol) and had NACS inventory didn’t have anything to sell *me* unless i wanted to order and wait 1-10 months.
and thanks to the election there is literally no financial incentive to look at pre owned inventory. literally none. why pay in excess of MSRP for a used car?
anyway… a thread 🧵

here’s an ariadne pro tip, that i’ve learned from buying other cars from other companies (GM mostly): get the car in black and then don’t worry about panel gaps
(can’t be mad about what can’t be easily seen)

@ariadne black is often a premium color though

things that are cool:
- password to start the car (but… it’s a base 10 PIN only, yuck) and open the glovebox
- the drag coefficient helps a lot in terms of efficiency verses the bolt
- being able to drive above 65mph without totally destroying my battery (no seriously this was a real bummer with the bolt, especially since my use of a car is for more eclectic purposes than the average commuter. 65mph in a 70mph zone isn’t acceptable and the traffic itself will harass you for it)
- the front trunk (but i’ve had that before on other cars i’ve owned) -

things that suck:
- the musk family’s deep connections to and involvement with apartheid (and everything else since then, including and especially *demanding windows server be used at paypal*)
- it is not particularly clear (to me, anyway) what the ethical state of tesla’s supply chain is
- (…)
- the turn signal buttons (but you would probably make the adjustment quickly, at least i have)
- the lack of carplay support (but the infotainment is at least reasonable, unlike most)
- half the things are named after stupid memes
- the steering feels like a video game, even on the most resistive setting
- it drives like a go-kart, but has a drag coefficient of something like .29 and weighs 4000 pounds. this is fucking terrifying to me
- to put the car in drive, i have to drag a car icon forward, and to put the car in reverse, i have to drag the car backward. this requires more cognitive load than to just move a gear selector 4 notches forward, etc.
- why is the software always wanting to be updated
- why is there all this bloat in the infotainment?
- why no AM radio?suffice it to say: if i could have, i would have gone elsewhere with my business

@ariadne no AM radio because they can't (or don't want to cough up money to) add EMI shielding to the drive units

@traumaphoenix yeah no i get that, and besides AM is basically obsolete anyway. but a lot of information systems in the US still use AM radio, so i feel like they should be required to support it

as an update i just got a recall notice for my NACS to CCS1 adapter, so feeling like i made the right call to just get a car which is already using the NACS connector to begin with

(if anyone in the seattle area wants a lectron NACS to CCS1 adapter, feel free to let me know. not like i have a need for it.)

@ariadne When did CCS become obsolete?
-
Ariadne Conill 🐰:therian:replied to Demi Marie Obenour last edited by
@alwayscurious when NACS came out in north america, it obsoleted CCS1. so over time, using public DCFC with CCS1 will require an adapter, and the adapters can be a bit finicky.
