it is annoying to see how this network frequently will flip out over singular posts taken out of context and turn it into something it clearly isn't.

it is annoying to see how this network frequently will flip out over singular posts taken out of context and turn it into something it clearly isn't.
today's example: @packetcat ("the ak-47 guy") wasn't actually wishing violence against trans people, but against TERFs (it is the TERFs who sometimes refer to transfeminine people as baeddels).
but, because of the disinformation being spread about them, featuring the now-deleted post quoted out of context, many have been duped into believing that he was posting a fantasy about mass-murdering transwomen.
well, it's *not* true. they never said they wanted to do this to transwomen.
whether or not it is in good taste to talk about wanting to shoot TERFs is debatable, but it's not debatable that the post in context was about TERFs, not about transwomen.
good moderation is actually fact-checking the assertions in reports, and reviewing the reported content in appropriate context.
bad moderation is reacting to content that is not properly contextualized, and this is sadly the majority of moderation we see both in the fediverse but also in the generalized internet (for example, discord suspending my account for "being under 13" even though it is pretty obvious i am an adult, because somebody massreported a single message out of context).

@ariadne Are you saying you believe the term "these baedellist fuckers," in context, was referring to TERFs and not to trans women?
Or are you arguing that baeddelism, to the extent that it existed, was a TERF ideology?
I'm not sure I've ever heard that term not used to refer to trans women. Especially given how "transmisandry" was in the content warning.

@ariadne Like, I think reasonable people can disagree about how seriously to take a post about doing a shooting from a Canadian.
I just can't find a way to wrap my mind around that post not being about wanting to shoot the trans women that he perceives as being baeddelists.

like. why are people out here trying to defend "oh they didn't say they want to shoot trans people, they just want to shoot other people instead" as if that's a good defense -

@ariadne I've seen the post in question, and I'm struggling to find a way to reach the same conclusion that you did. is there some sort of additional context or evidence that I'm missing?

@[email protected] I am irritated to no end that you did not discuss this with the rest of the moderation team before doing it

@EeveeEuphoria If you're using threats of violence to control people's behavior that just makes you a cop and that's not ideal.
Baeddels are not TERFs (and calling them TIRFs makes no sense).
Given that it's a movement that lasted for a few months on Tumblr, a decade ago, it's weird to assign it to trans women in 2024.
But I respect @ariadne a lot, and am interested in her perspective. Even if I don't agree with her, I want to understand what she's saying.

@fedilore @EeveeEuphoria my perspective is that i have seen TERFs refer to transwomen as baeddels (as a slur).
thus my read of their post's use of "baeddelists" is "people who refer to transwomen as baeddels".
but i am muting this conversation because i am not interested in dealing with people who are defending their bad faith behaviors

@violet doing what, exactly? i have performed no moderation action rather than to comment on the disinformation being spread about an incident.
disinformation that you are helping to spread.
maybe you should not be part of a moderation team if you are willing to spread disinformation simply because it's what your social circle is spreading as gospel.
