Trying to remember the technology I worked with in the mid/late 1990s. It was a packet-based wireless system that would "hop" between nodes. Nodes were typically deployed on street lights. It was very widely deployed around Washington, DC at the time. Interface to the device was a serial port.
None of that is useful search terms as far as I can tell.
This is all pre-GPRS even. I feel like speed was in the 9600bps range?
