The fastest non-Google controlled web rendering engine Servo is trying to compete with only $1.6k funding a month:
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Servo-Engine-May-2024Yes, they did have an NLNet grant, but that ran out.
If we want an alternative to Blink/Chrome, we need to fund it. This is a project where even a tiny regular amount could yield oversize returns:

@Blort just started being a backer

@Blort Chromium is licensed under the 3-clause BSD license and is not controlled by Google. Anyone can fork it, as with any *other* FOSS project.
That said, I'm happy to see Servo's test pass rate climbing closer to 100%!

Control is wielded by more than a license.
To quote Chromium's Wikipedia page:
"in terms of governance, the Chromium projects are not independent entities; Google retains firm control of them."...and that's only governance which is still just one of many avenues along with funding, development, marketing etc.

470 boosts and 368 likes? Y'all are crazy!
I just hope some of you are also ponying up even a dollar or two to help the servo project out.
Either way, I appreciate your help getting the word out!

@Blort I was not aware how bad their budget is. I /love/ what amazing stuff they're doing, they got my support now!

@Blort
Perhaps, likely, a newbie question. But can I like force my browser to use a particular rendering engine?This certainly seems like an incredibly important project, never heard of it before.
Thanks for making me aware of it, will read a bit and then see if can setup a recurring monthly donation.
Will soon need a service to keep track of donations being made...

@nopatience Sadly, no. A rendering engine is too deeply intgrated into any browser that currently no browser I know of supports swapping it out. That said, major browsers have switched before, although this was usually after months of work at a major version upgrade.
