@sam is wondering about other uses for pedal power:
Q6. We've all seen bicycle blenders; what other practical pedal powered non-transportation devices have you seen?

I bought an old hand powered drill press from a friend for $15. I was very impressed with how efficiently the machine could remove metal. I needed a way to cut the miters in tubing for bikes. Making bikes with pedal power somehow seemed like the essence of appropriate technology, so I made a ten speed horizontal boring mill with pedals. I sold about ten of these to other frame builders. When the power went out in my shop, I just kept working! This machine was written up in Mother Earth News in the early 80's. Later I converted a few other devices to human power, including making a generator stand for electricity and a 5-gallon ice cream maker.
I believe this is a photo of the boring mill: https://halebikes.com/pictures/building/28.html

@kg6gfq @ascentale oh damn, I was literally just thinking that I need a drill press so I don't have to file frame tubes by hand, this is too perfect!

@ascentale This question inspired by this coffee grinder at an espresso place just off my temporary Canadian commute:

@dx @ascentale oh damn, I need a band saw too… someone else posted a pedal powered drill press. Maybe I need to build all bike powered frame building tools!

@ascentale @sam A6.
solar.lowtechmagazine.com is a good source for this sort of stuff. For example:Human Powered Air Compressor and Energy Storage System
This is a solar-powered website, which means it sometimes goes offline

@InkySchwartz @ascentale oh nice! I've been trying to get electricity to my compressor for ages (old house, breaker box is small and full), maybe I should do this!
