Does anybody on mastodon have a single user instance where they maintain multiple profiles?
-
@cthos @cthonicstudios yeah that's sort of what I expect too. Do you get any engagement on the boosts?
-
@polotek Some of us read all of what you have to say.
-
@WTL thanks. I'm not sure if I'll actually pursue this. But I'll almost certainly have a feed that includes everything.
-
I don't think it's that simple. Social media is used for many things. It's not only about expressing our intimate selves. We might also be trying to do business or organize people. And it does matter to have certain channels stay on message. It's not about hiding parts of ourselves. I used the word "coherent", and I think that's still the right word. We contain multitudes. And I think compartmentalizing is what helps make space for all of it.

I understand that some people don't really understand the difference between wanting to carry a specific message and being somehow inauthentic. Or maybe they are afraid of trying to navigate that, and staying away from anything that looks like a "brand" account helps. I don't know.
But having separate accounts doesn't make you not a real person. And only following people if they have a messy combined account isn't actually respecting who people choose to be.
-
People are talking to me about "brands" and "personas". But really I'm thinking about sharing some incredibly vulnerable things. Keeping it sequestered is more about me trying to manage some feelings. Because I also have other things I want to talk about, and I want people to take those things seriously too.
I don't know. I'm annoyed at some of the responses I received today. We often don't realize how often we squash people by making assumptions.
-
@polotek Earlier I typed then deleted a response to your initial post about how Google+ had this pretty workable "Circles" feature, and how I wish I could give people the option of subscribing to "all my posts" or "just the music posts" or "just the politics posts". If somebody just wants to read my posts about music why swamp their feed with politics stuff they didn't want to read. Social media figured out how to make this work and then forgot how to make it work.
-
@mcc I think my impression of circles is that it felt like it required a lot of maintenance. That's certainly what it was for me.
-
Someone brought up Google+ circles. That's a deep cut. Like many people, I was initially intrigued by Circles. But ultimately I realized it wasn't the right solution. I don't think you wanna manage who's in your circle. They manage that by joining.
It's more like I'm getting comfortable with the idea that people may be initially interested in different aspects of what I talk about. I think most of would prefer to ramp up to eventually absorbing a whole person.
-
I'm also wondering if providing a slower on-ramp would help mitigate the prevalence of unhealthy parasocial relationships. We could have aspects geared towards people consuming our work or our causes. But it's mostly broadcast only. And we can have other aspects where people can connect with us personally, and we engage in return. But they gotta be cool and not fuck it up.
-
Also I kinda wanna write a book in public. But like... that's gonna be hella messy. And it may also fizzle out because I can't keep my thoughts straight (hashtag ADHD). I just feel like it'll be easier for me to try it if that project has its own... area.

@polotek Yo i was there! We even had Collections which let you separate posts of different topics and people were able to follow them separately than just following all your posts. I had the biggest Star Wars collection there up until 2012 when they pulled the plug

@aredridel @mcc that was such a bizarre choice.

@fedijedi yeah. We can't let anybody else own our stuff anymore.

@polotek you're always so thoughtful and yes having multiple accounts for different groups that aren't linked to each other is pretty necessary sometimes.
or having:
tech me -> tech but with follower requests
non-tech me -> non-tech me but with follower requests
