I appreciate this post. But I also noticed something important in the replies. Many people are anxious about standing up in this way. There are real social and cultural consequences for taking a stand against racism. It's not free. It actually costs white people to try to change white supremacist culture. That's one of the reasons that progress comes in fits and starts. White people aren't used to paying social and cultural costs. Many of them give in very quickly.

@polotek It seems like it cuts both ways. The social consequences to the op's BIL from them walking out repeatedly in front of everyone, as a consequence of BIL's behavior, seems like it shut him up permanently pretty quickly, too. I guess you're saying it's just a question of who has the guts to make a stir first, and longest. I like that framing.
