I do have a day rate, although I don't show it on my site/portfolio as I prefer to chat with people as everyone is at a different place in their journey… I feel that a day rate might put them off before the conversation has even started.
I would welcome thoughts on this!

@andycarolan I have not put my rate up on my design biz. But I do have them on my building science site. It’s rare to see them on a creative’s site but I feel it would save time by weeding out time wasters.

@SeaFury It's a difficult one isn't it. Speaking from the perspective of the industries I work in, it might weed out time wasters, but it might also put off genuine enquiries that might need a slightly lower price to make it viable for them.

@andycarolan I agree! Some clients need a lower rate. Usually, in that case, I quote a set price. Otherwise it’s too scary for them to commit. Pricing design jobs is an art. Im at a stage in my career where I rarely take in design clients and if I do, it’s usually at my regular rate with no discounts.

@SeaFury I do try to offer set prices instead of a day rate... it takes the ambiguity out of the price for them.
100% agree with what you say about discounts. It's rare to get a discount with any other profession! Same goes for freebies... I don't get to try before I buy at the supermarket lolol

@andycarolan I stopped doing pro bono work. If I want to serve my community, I volunteer in other ways, I no longer offer what I usually charge for, for free. It gets messy!!

@andycarolan I donʼt put my prices on there, for similar reasons. Iʼll even do pro bono in some situations. Multinationals pay full price.

@SeaFury Sounds like the best plan really! We all need money to live after all!

@jackyan Good plan!

@andycarolan I have two perspectives on this. (1) As a digital learning designer I'm offering a creative service. I don't advertise my prices because the work is so varied it would be pretty much impossible to do. I also have different rates for non-profits vs corporates. (2) On some projects I'm commissioning other creatives, in which case I'd rather discuss things and agree a fair price. A list of prices can make me think I'm going to get a cookie cutter solution.
-
@andycarolan One thing I have seen, is where people put something like "our typical projects start at £xxxx" - which might be enough to put off the timewasters. But I think that only works if you have a set offer (or a menu of offers).
-
@andycarolan Dave Smyth is quite open about pricing, and it seems to work for him. You can always book an unoffice hours call with him. He's a nice fella.
-
@barrysampson It's similar for me in that my work is varied... I'm not going to quote the same rate to a solo person startup as I am to a marketing company working for a multinational.
Yes, I also work with other creatives too, and it's always best to have a conversation there.
-
@barrysampson Ooh, Dave Smyth's site is nice! Lots of info there about the process and pricing.
"You won’t find me on social media – the best way to contact me is by email" Living the dream lol. Honestly, I would lose a lot of my business if I went that route lolol.

@andycarolan we put pricing bands with examples. Rate card is a request-only so it’s not visible to all of our competitors. (Don’t want to make it too easy!)

@andycarolan also, if someone is put off by your day rate, they’re probably not someone you want to talk to!

@rowan_johnson Pricing bands/examples is a very good idea! I need to attract some ongoing work, as most projects this year have been small/one offs... although I have been grateful for them.

@rowan_johnson 100% - I have had to increase my day rate this year though, to be more in line with other illustrators/designer. I've been too cheap for years lol
