It occurs to me that perhaps we're paying WAY TOO MUCH for cloud storage.

@killyourfm I just always worry when a service is too cheap and it's for storage. I'm not sure if this is actually reasonable or not, but I would very much like the company that keeps my files to stick around for as long as I do.

@trezzer That is the FIRST thought that went through my mind, too. "Will they ever go out of business?" It feels like a gamble, but then so do mainstream solutions like iCloud and OneDrive these days...

@killyourfm lifetime is BS. Lifetime cloud storage doesn't exist

@thibaultmol Even if they stick around for only 5 years, feels like a bargain. But your point is definitely heard. WHOSE lifetime, exactly? Mine or the lifetime of the company?

@thibaultmol Serious question: *could* it be financially viable if they have a ton of customers paying a large upfront cost, which then gets invested into, for example, a high-yield savings account or some other interest-generating solution?

I used to worry about that, but In my (albeit limited) experience, they don't usually go offline overnight so you'll have time to move your files if they do go out of business (hopefully not cause I love filen). Now I just ask myself if it suits my needs right now.
Also, I may be wrong, but the lifetime plans I believe are for November/Black Friday only. Proton and others do something similar.

@killyourfm This doesn't give the best first impression. Everything green, one bar not filled - can't continue.

@trezzer Did you confirm the password? Doesn't look like it...

Yep! Used to jump around between pcloud and more mainstream solutions but I’ve been happy with filen for the past year or so.
Given, I only use cloud storage services to store and share files from win/mac/linux computers, can’t really comment on different needs.
I’ve heard that photo syncing on Android is a bit wonky, but I don’t use that.

@eferis @trezzer I'm currently using Nextcloud self-hosted on Hetzner, but I find I don't truly *need* Nextcloud, especially since I've scaled down the number of devices I use.
My main concern is just storing *everything* from backups of my Plex server to music production files to a lifetime of photos. (I also back these up locally, but redundancy is good!)

@killyourfm I've done a 'Lifetime' with Icedrive. It's not been bad so far, I think after about 3 and a half more years I'll start saving money on the deal.
I think as long as you have the upfront cash to buy the 'lifetime' deals, and intend on using that storage for years and years, it can be a good deal. -

@adamthomasmusic Provided the company intends to stick around long enough! Thanks for sharing your experience, appreciate it.

@dexternemrod @adamthomasmusic NICE! Well I'm going to take Filen for a spin, and if I enjoy the experience I'll spring for a lifetime purchase. They also seem very transparent, and have a roadmap, both of which I sincerely appreciate.
