As a Dutchman TIL. I would take this with a huge grain of salt, bordering to disinformation, because in NL there's no "wilderness". There's no "tradition" of "dropping" that I know of.
Did someone someday drop their kind somewhere? Likely. Then your only emergency equipment need be your phone and a lantern. And you walk half an hour to find the nearby road in your 'wilderness'.

@smallcircles @todayilearned The Boy Scouts in Holland did this. Dropping a group of kids of around 11 yrs of age with a compass and basic (literal) pathfinding skills to find their way back to camp. We even did it at night in the 80s when I was in the scouts. And we obviously had no phones back then.

It may well be that this is a Boy Scout tradition then. I can imagine it is a nice experience and adventure as a kid.
