Volunteering to help out at a big dance weekend and I'm allowed to go to some of the workshops. One of them is about "how to leverage AI tools for advertising on Instagram, Facebook, Meetup, โฆ." I should not go to this because I'm not good at pushing back without being a jerk, but having this presentation with a completely uncritical eye really pisses me off. Especially since the presenter has started some shit at other dance communities I've been a part of.

Anyways, suggestions for making the rest of the people there (who are mostly older and enamored with this guy because they're trying to get more young people into the scene and don't understand how to reach them and he does) how to realize that community building is the key and not bullshit convenience culture stochastic parrot plagiarism machines would be appreciated.

(the logo for the dance weekend is also a horrible uncanny valley AI monstrosity, and this is a dance scene with dozens of local artists who would have absolutely done something for free even though the dance could probably afford to pay them, so I'm not hopeful that I can reach anyone, but you never know)

@sam If youโre attached to this community it could be a good idea to run a talk or something on the next meeting about this subject. And if you want to be a little devious you could make it a bit inflammatory to get people interested. Something along the lines of โI asked AI how to build community and hereโs how itโs wrongโ

@sky oooh, that's a good one, I like that! Thanks!

@sam @sky
Someone used that exact framing at an event this summer and it actually worked great.
I had been about a talk "Gen AI and genealogy" but the speaker ran through examples of LLMs outputting plausible-sounding but incorrect info about the ancestors of the people in the audience (small town historical society). Then he showed a case study of exploring the life of the same historical people via digitized census records instead - so, not just the "don't" but also the "instead" -
@kdnyhan @sky I am very much not qualified to give this speech, but you've got me really wanting to now! Despite almost everything I do day-to-day involving some sort of community building and organizing I've never been very good at it and mostly when I give presentations I get the "your argument wasn't as well presented, so it must be wrong" fallacy and feel like I've done more harm than good, but I feel like this is such good framing it would be a shame if it got skipped over.
