This isn't a guilting post I just genuinely think actions do not occur to people as possible in certain realms and that it would be helpful if they did

@grimalkina i haven’t had any success getting my insurance company to be better, but i did get my university to stop automatically dropping grad students on medical leave from coverage

At the least, even if you don't create change, you expand the explanations necessary and reveal flaws. I've asked, "Can I get a very detailed explanation of WHY we think this is the best choice that serves the people in this organization," and maybe this is just my particular gift (being incredibly pedantically annoying about requiring proof for things), but it's definitely hung around in people's minds. Take it from someone who's given evidence for policy, these decisions are also social

@grimalkina While the US healthcare system is a nightmarish dystopian hellscape, it's surprising how much flexibility there is when there are employee requests and employer pushback. This is doubly true for employers large enough to be self-insured, where the insurance companies are "just" administrators.
You're 100% right, it's always worth asking because a surprising number of times things will get less bad when you do.

@wordshaper @grimalkina related it is often possible to get a significant discount for healthcare expenses if you ask and can pay quickly (even when insured)
Which is yet another example of this system being tilted in favor of the wealthy/those with the ability to pay.
For example when I had appendicitis a few years ago the hospital offered me a 20% discount on my deductible costs if I paid within 72 hrs of leaving the hospital (an even offered a refund if my insurance paid more than estimate
