@stefan how much expertise do I need to host my own bots, is there a primer?
-
@bdeskin That's a great question, and I'll be putting something together on that as part of my migration.
In short, you have two options. You could run your own fediverse server, and that can be broken down to several more options in terms of which platform to choose, and whether to run your own server, or use one of the hosting services https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/lessons-learned-from-running-a-single-person-mastodon-instance/#hosting
And there's the option of running your bot as a standalone ActivityPub server, eg https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/113393295662552863
-
@bdeskin There's a lot to consider in terms of cost, necessary technical skills, and time involvement.
For my own needs I am torn between running a GoToSocial server (more lightweight and cheaper to run than Mastodon, which many agree is a bit of an overkill for bots), and turning each bot into an ActivityPub server with something like https://fedify.dev.
-
@bdeskin But I am also thinking about https://botwiki.org, which is more aimed at enthusiasts, and I want to keep things simple and cheap, or preferably free.
-
@stefan thanks I will check out GoToSocial

@bdeskin Hope this works for you, definitely feel free to share your experience!
