I know I'm old-fashioned, but if someone was dropping $100,000 a week into my bank account for online postings, I'd be at least a tiny bit curious where the money was coming from...

@dangillmor Sam Seder made a good point today, they are familiar with getting that kind of money, "wingnut welfare" is what we call it. There aren't the same levels of cash on the left.
Marcy Wheeler @emptywheel was on @nicolesandler today and pointed out that independent journalists get offers like this from time to time. When she got them from Iran, she rejected them.
Here's the link to the whole segment that includes her other insights on the story. -
@spocko I was offered a pile of money once to give a government-sponsored speech in a dictatorship. I said fine, I'll donate the proceeds to a human rights NGO the government hated. Never heard back from them after that... @emptywheel @nicolesandler

Just can't get this NY Times 'Manoverse' article out of mind.
Donald Trump Courts the Manoverse: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/30/us/politics/trump-politics-nelk-boys.html?smid=nytcore-android-share
Odd it coming out the week before the indictments. And the influencers they mention seem like such potential targets. The Nelk Boys even took a trip to Russia in 2023. Who just goes to Russia these days? Are we just seeing the tip of the iceberg?

@mastodonmigration @dangillmor @spocko @emptywheel @nicolesandler we have a manhood crisis. This is sad choosing this guy as a masculine role model:

@Chiquidrakula Then along comes Tim Walz to national stage who, in my opinion, does a damn fine job showing-not-telling what it means to be a good, adult, everyday kind of male.
Nontoxic or even non-idealized examples have been few as of late. We've been seeing dozens of variations on misogyny, bombast, greed-is-good high-powered CEOs, or even Marvel superheroes.
I'm hoping we can grow into a stronger place that builds the good and kind in the everyday Joe.

Let's elevate mature caring male role models like Tim Walz over this toxic soup of he-man bro podcast nonsense.
