Today marks 2 years since s.basspistol.org was first ran. I'm still not in love with activitypub, but i'm content with this particular choice. I once made a poll to query admins if they would change the software they use if it didn't mean sacrificing the community they've built. My reach is tiny and there are not nearly as many admins as users on the network. Anyone could have answered. But the majority, if not all, of the 4 or 5 who answered marked that they would change if they could.
This is what i dislike about the protocol: It's free software, but it comes with a social type of vendor lock-in.
Not sure to what extend it is possible, but i hope someone knowledgeable is looking into a tool to migrate a community from one system to another. It would shake things up pretty powerfully in the space. Because it seems to be dominated by website boys that are mostly interested in growing a name for themselves. Of course there are exceptions to this like the GoToSocial project, the many forks and individual builders patching up the gaps between systems, (Stefan, you rock! :cyber_heart_sparkle_purple:)
I realize this note is a bit more sour than i intended. I might not be in love with activitypub, but i am deeply enamored in the network. The people. They are everything that make up this space. Hoping through hoops and hinders, collaborating to take control over their means of digital expression, using what gives to make it special. Thank you for being here! To one more year of fedibonanza! -
@setto Happy two year anniversary, and thank you for the shout-out!
