see, back in my day, games were different. we didn't have fancy graphics or anything like that. my first console was a Toshiba Recreationizer, it was this steel box, nearly featureless aside from a lightbulb and a cube.

Eventually Toshiba came out with an expansion port. It was this electric chair you would strap a small monkey into. The manner in which the monkey was shocked opened up a whole new avenue of output besides just the light bulb, it was a bigger jump for gaming than 3D

nowadays we don't go so barbaric. Instead of running through monkey after monkey, modern councils have a specifically bred microape strapped to a sophisticated torture device that would subject them to new and unique varieties of pain for every type of button input.
At some point animal rights activists insisted video game consoles launch in generations, so that the apelettes only have to endure that pain for 10 years or so. Only a handful of gamers are cruel enough to still play retro games.
