My little solar-powered shitposting station costs $5/mo, you ridiculous monkeys
-
This is like Mastodon 4 Harris, except it's an even worse idea.
-
Stop raising money for shit that won't help anyone challenge
-
Like in case anyone wants to know how much it costs to run your own copy of the people's protocol, it's $30 million.
-
The kind of stuff you and your friends can just daisy-chain together out of parts you found in your--oh wait, nevermind, that's ActivityPub.
-
Like any Bluesky stan who wants to scoff at me making fun of Bluesky not actually being decentralized needs to somehow square the fact that to actually make it decentralized costs $30 Million and I can't even say that sentence out loud without my mouth gaping like a fish in shock that these words just came out of my mouth.
Like I'm incredulous even as I know what I'm saying, and about to say, and it still shocks me that this is a thing.
-
If they could have decentralized Bluesky for $20k and a bag of chips, they'd have started lower.
In any case, this looks like the kind of shit that gets rugpulled somewhere down the line.

@oli Definitely interesting to contrast this with Mastodon's call for €5 million in donations.
The people should own the town square
It is more important than ever that the social web is not controlled by corporations. Today, Mastodon is taking another step towards its founding ideals: independence and non-profit ownership. We're transferring ownership of key assets to a new European not-for-profit entity, ensuring our mission remains true to a decentralised social web, not corporate control.

Like FFS, give Mastodon $5 Million. It's certainly more likely to pay dividends than giving $30 Million to Not Bluesky to make Not Bluesky.

I remember someone explaining to me that, well, actually, Bluesky is decentralized, in a manner of speaking, because PDS, and I said you can't run your own relay, and they said well someone did do it themselves, and it costs them only $175/mo and honestly storage space is pretty cheap these days so you could probably do that with like 65 TB a year and I'm like are you fucking serious.
-
@[email protected] 65tb a year man i am pretty sure transfem.social uses less than a terabyte for the millions of notes in db
