Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com and Tumblr, announced on Wednesday that it will start to move the site’s half a billion blogs to the new WordPress-based backend.

I was also wondering if individual blogs, once they change, will have the option to turn on federation.

That could be a game changer especially if just one or 2% of the very popular Tumblr blogs enters the Fediverse

I can understand that from a SEO perspective. I was thinking some of these platforms that enter the fediverse through their own publishing systems need to develop away that only subscribers, including paid subscribers, can federate and follow from the Fediverse.

I guess it could be done like follow request and the backend of the publishing system checks to see if the Fediverse follow request is whitelisted as a subscriber.
