To realise exactly why the Cybertruck is terrible first you have to appreciate that car and motorbike design is one of the United States’ most refined and advanced aesthetic arts: it is a thing they have been doing for a century, every generation building on the previous, every time expressing some visual aspect of the society. Car culture soaks every other aesthetic art so that buildings, clothes, appliances, all look car-like. Cars are their cathedrals.
The Cybertruck is heir to nothing in that tradition, it’s an object out of time. It looks funny because it’s not recognisably designed at all.

You can’t even call it outsider art, because everything about it shows huge effort and expense, and certainly there have been people who have worked on it who have car design knowledge and appreciation. But what’s obviously happened is that for their pay they agreed to abandon what they knew about automobility and make something that expressed just… ignorance about car art.

It just fucking sucks. It’s so depressing. It makes me want to tell people fuck you, go and look at ZZ Top’s car. Just go and look at it.

Isn't it just an armoured vehicle to protect the people inside from plebs ...?

@liamvhogan I had not seen that before, and holy shit that rules.

Having thought about it. The influence of car design on American visual culture is so pervasive there’s only one commodity that’s really escaped the ‘looks a bit like a car’ aesthetic, by way of having its own visual importance and cultural significance to that society, and that commodity is guns

@liamvhogan I mean, Harley Earl looked at a P-38 and invented tail fins on cars. However he'd cut his teeth in the world of hot rods and customs, apropos your mention of the ZZ Top car. The cybertruck is just trying too hard to be low-poly, such things are not meant to graduate from the world of concept cars without having some of the rough edges filed off (so to speak).
