@jkb @sarajw in the UK, there's a transphobic campaign by women centered around "female" being the biological definition of woman, so it's hard for me not to see it in that context, where it's talking about science instead of people. To me, female whilst scientifically accurate, is often used outside science to express a desire to return to some ideal past, just as incels and Nazis want.
