Good thread this morning by @wdlindsy featuring opinions that push back on the emerging 'blame the Democrats' narratives being offered by the media about why Harris lost, and suggesting instead disinformation, delusion and a compliant media is at the crux of the matter.

"When the dust settles, I expect the people who assess elections will tell us disinformation was key in 2024. It wasn’t the economy, it was the disinformation about the economy. ... It requires education and discernment to separate fact from fiction, and often that's lacking. That’s the problem: educating people so they can make judgments about what’s true." ~ Joyce Vance #Trump #Republicans #fascism #cruelty #future #disinformation /1 https://joycevance.substack.com/p/the-importance-of-information

Imagine that. The corporate media does not acknowledge or even see their culpability in this fiasco. ️

@mastodonmigration Thank you — both for sharing my thread and stating the main point so clearly.

I think the focus should be on how to defeat fascists.
And you can only defeat fascists with some measure of accountability for what happened. Accountability for the media, absolutely, but also for whoever dug the hole that Plouffe referred to.
I think Plouffe was right, and silencing him will do nothing to help Americans to confront fascism.

Thank you for focusing on this issue. Until we wake up to the fact we are in an information war and devote real effort to building out information systems defensible from corporate manipulation, like Mastodon and the Fediverse, we are lost.

I mostly agree that the focus should be on how to defeat fascists. We only disagree on how that's best done.
I think you can only defeat fascists with some measure of accountability for what happened. Accountability for the media, absolutely, but also for whoever dug the hole that Plouffe referred to.

For all the talk about the intolerant left, silencing Plouffe seems to me like a very Stalinistic move.

@vruz @mastodonmigration No serious person says that we shouldn't figure out why things have gone wrong, when dark kairotic moments intrude in our history. People have spent years after the Hitler period asking that question, and rightly so. I think now is not the moment to focus on what went wrong as if that's an explanation for why fascism is ascendant. Some of us who are in the sights of the coming fascist rulers do not have the luxury of doing armchair analysis like that.

Women who are being taunted RIGHT NOW with chants of "Your body, my choice" deserve solidarity, not energy wasted on blaming the Democrats that this is happening.
People of color receiving text messages RIGHT NOW instructing them to return to slavery deserve our solidarity not energy wasted on blaming Democrats that this is happening.
And this is only the beginning….

@mastodonmigration @wdlindsy The people to blame for Trump are: Trump, the GOP and its corporate allies and funders, and Americans who voted for Trump.
The distinction between the two candidates and what they offered was stark and manifest.
If you offer rationality and progress and half the country chooses scapegoating idiocy and chaos, it's their choice and their responsibility for the consequences of that choice. Ignore anyone who blames you for bad packaging.

Certainly this is true. And the most effective tool these people used to achieve this result was mass delusion. Yes, the masses are responsible for being manipulated and yes the propaganda played to their worst instincts, and that is horrific, but until we acknowledge this is an information war and grab hold of real ways to counter it we are at their mercy.

Can't both be true? Yes, Plouffe may be right, and yes assessment of all the huge errors that contributed to this disaster is warranted. But, this is also a time we need to understand how the focus of the mainstream media contributes to public perceptions. When they indulge in focus on Democratic infighting they are distracting us from the ongoing disaster, the need to unify against it, and their culpability in facilitating it.
-
Completely agree with this. Best thing he did was to delete his account on X. If more of them would do so, we might get somewhere.

"Figure out what went wrong"? The answers are already there. Democrats don't listen.
Read "Listen Liberal" by Thomas Frank. Listen to Ralph Nader.
Both Thomas and Ralph were/are right. But the Democrats don't listen.
Democrats pay attention to polls. What they don''t do, is pay attention or listen to the people. They think that because they went to blue blood schools, they know what's good for people.
At this point I'm not sure the party is redeemable.

All this frustration is appropriate. But both things can be true. Democrats need to listen and need to be in control of their own messaging. There is a feedback loop here that needs to be understood. Otherwise we are simply prey to their manipulations, and our most important debates can be inflamed and turned against us to stoke disunity instead of consensus.

Yes, the right has been fed lies and propaganda for years. But that's just a symptom.
The cause for people to wander was that Democrats left the working people years ago.
