@rysiek A very, very mixed bag. It can be useful but is very often getting shoehorned into all sorts of things in decidedly un-useful ways.

@vwbusguy I mean at this point the very term became meaningless.
Or, perhaps, it started to mean (as you kind of alluded to) "that weird crap that got shoehorned into an otherwise useful product or service in a completely un-useful (or outright detrimental) way."

@rysiek It is really situational. ML has a lot of research use cases where you have well curated data and HPC resources available. LLM code generation can be useful for pedagogy or scaffolding the tedious parts of getting started. There are some things where LLM automation can be good *if done well, like scheduling appointments, that many would love to not *require* picking up a phone, waiting on hold, and then reconciling calendars with someone.

@rysiek That said, we've all been pelted and inundated with LLM doing stuff nobody asked for and worse, many have been laid off because of the failed deliverables of LLM that were promised to various suits by unscrupulous sales people (on top of other legit criticisms around intellectual property, bias, and environmental impact).

@dfirnotes @rysiek Because this is a many-year pet peeve of mine: Those are not aliens. They're far-future robots.

@datarama @dfirnotes any far-enough-future robot is indistinguishable from alien?
