I appreciate that, as a distinguished and ethical journalist, Margaret Sullivan refuses to relent in her ongoing critique of the colossal failure of US corporate media at this critical juncture in history.

She gets closer to the truth when she says,
"And what’s more — what’s worse — they don’t seem to want to change. Editors and reporters, with a few exceptions, really don’t see the problem as they normalize Trump. Nor do they appear to listen to valid criticism."
They DO in fact know what they're doing. They're choosing to do it. Rather than let anyone representing constructive and much-needed change near the White House, they prefer to invite fascism in.

They — as in the well-heeled owners of corporate media and top managers of corporate media — do not want the kind of constructive changes that would in any way threaten their economic dominance and their power to control. They have cast their lot with fascism because they want tax cuts and deregulation. They are in league with the tech-bro fascists like Elon Musk who are undermining democratic institutions as hard as they can for the same reasons.
The media have betrayed us.

"One would assume corporate media would use all of their power, resources and privileges to warn Americans about the very real threat of Trump and MAGA but we’ve discovered most of them are masochists willing to bend the knee and engage in 'both sides' reporting for sake of access, ratings, and money."

Why Do We Insist on Being Hijacked By Trump and MAGA's Violence?
Trump just praised a violent rallygoer who attempted to inflict violence on the press. Earlier this week, his team pushed aside an Arlington Cemetary official who protested his photo-op. Enough.

Oh oh oh!!!
It's all so much simpler that that.
It's not that they don't know how to cover the trump it's that their owners will give them the sack if they do.
Oligarchs do not tolerate the truth that threatens their wealth. -

@wdlindsy The one thing that gives me most hope about the Harris-Walz campaign is how they actually understand this and have internalized that the corporate media are no longer the 'fourth estate' but part of the enemy they have to defeat, replace, neutralize and/or circumvent. It's a tall order, but so far they are doing everything right.
BTW this is one place where Harris's Blackness informs her.

@martinvermeer I agree. Those are good points. Thank you for making them.

I noticed that you quote a lot of independent writers with their own -what used to be called - blogs.
It's a bit late in the voting season to be asking this, but: where DO we get real, reliable news?
My friends have asked me this repeatedly, and all I can say is that I spend inordinate amounts of time reading and have found journalists I trust rather than news outlets, and go with them.
But who has time to do that?

@CelloMomOnCars That's a good question, and one I ask myself to which I don't have complete answers. The first thing I'd say is, what the corporate media have now shown us might make us pause and reflect on our belief for a long time that they were actually critically important sources of "news." I have increasingly turned to commentators online whom I trust, and they point me to news articles that seem worth reading. The one corporate media outlet I read daily is The Guardian.

@CelloMomOnCars @wdlindsy Semafor is a good source. My understanding is two disenchanted Times journalists created it. Another is AP news. They all have their biases but…

@wdlindsy here is an excellent explanation as to why humans are attracted to hate and a dominant male. Also I find Hartmann and excellent read.

All news outlets have bias of course. But there are real problems with the public thinking the for-profit news is there for the public benefit.
I find both AP and Reuters to be pretty good. The Guardian has the perspective of being an international org (it's sort of the way expats don't vote for the local right-wing parties).
Then there the non-profit outlets, Pro Publica is excellent, the Philadelphia Inquirer is more local but also good. I don't have tv.

@CelloMomOnCars @wdlindsy I am not so sure about that anymore. Almost everyone I know is very aware of the major bias of the, what I call tabloid and for profit, news. I never watch tv news except Rachael Maddow occasionally but I find her repetitive style annoying.

I find it distressing how many of my (perfectly smart, very engaged) friends give me a blank look when I point out the problems with the way the NYTimes has covered Biden.

The @MeidasTouch has grown into a very good independent news and analysis organization imo in terms of political and especially legal issues related to U.S. government. -

@wdlindsy @CelloMomOnCars Thanks for raising this question. I’m getting asked too and the askers don’t want anything that seems partisan in a left leaning way. So, my thought was for the Guardian. And/or Do you have comments about The Christian Science Monitor?
