"Through the service provider JPay, the New York State Department of Corrections provides incarcerated people with tablets, which allow us to send and receive secure emails to family and friends. With our tablets, we can browse a vast musical archive, unless weβre in solitary confinement for disciplinary reasons, but no legal materials. There is no word processor app on the tablets.
We can listen to tunes, but inside New York state prisons, guys who are drafting post-conviction motions in hopes of securing their liberty to make it back home to their family and loved ones are using typewriters."

The company mentioned in the article, Swintec, appears to specialize in the manufacture of typewriters and old-fashioned word processors for use in prisons. Most of their product line is shipped with clear enclosures, so guards can visually confirm inmates haven't hidden anything inside.

@jstogdill Swintec will cheerfully sell you one, if you think that's a good use of $400
