@[email protected] This! I just get major "I'm a good guy, you should listen to me" vibe from the Fedi userbase. They would get annoyed at someone for using Twitter or BlueSky as that's the "Nazi bar" but get angry at when individuals on Fedi asking not just basic respect but also to defederate some shady users/instance and dismissed it as 'drama'.
The lack of self-awareness on here is very concerning and I usually get anxious to criticize Fedi without thinking "oh god, somebody is going to explain to me like I'm 5 years old".

@matty @justinfagnani @mekkaokereke @ClipHead I think you're unfortunately exactly right. The only thing I can hope is that in time both the interface and the people using it moderate to something that is more compatible, I think it will get there, if slowly. But while we get there, it never hurts to be promoting Fedi at every chance we get, which I know many many do.

@[email protected] I am still rooting for Fedi, even if it may not be everyones' cup of tea. Despite some annoyance I have, I do enjoy Fedi and wish some quality of life features gets added as well as the user on there stop being as preachy or elitist.

@chris @mekkaokereke I wish the Fediverse were a place I could recommend in good conscience to people of color, but right now I think BlueSky is probably a healthier place for them to land. The Fediverse could change that, but shows no inclination to do so…. ️

@pooserville @mekkaokereke I hope deeply that that will change and also will try to do what I can to help make it happen.

@TapiocaPearl @vfrmedia @ClipHead @mekkaokereke maybe I'm being naive, but I always thought the notion of picking an instance was about finding common community with others rather than managing or distributing load.
To wit, going where your friends go makes way more sense than shotgunning across random instances.

That's a great list ... although also highlights one of the problems people have finding the right instance: it's a lot easier for people to find the Brazil-free list on joinmastodon.org than this one. In any case, great to hear that Brazilian fedierse sites are also getting a lot of onboarding!

That's true in principle but there aren't any good ways to see where your friends are. And ever since Mastodon changed the defaults, most people wind up on mastodon.social anyhow (which means that most people are likely to have more friends on mastodon.social than any other much smaller instance). It's something the fediverse really needs to solve ... but hasn't yet.

@jdp23 @mekkaokereke @vfrmedia @ClipHead @TapiocaPearl @drawks That’s … likely to be the problem. We’re judging an entire Fediverse by one instance, and we were always told it was too big already — even in late 2022.
I’m also confused by the implicit statement that you have to be on the instance your friends are on. No???

I didn't mean to imply that you have to be on an instance your friends are on. It's just a good heuristic in many cases. In general, people have better experiecnes if they're on well-moderated instances where the norms align and (ideally) there's a good, compatible local community. If your friends have stayed active on a server for a while and like it, it's probably reasonably well moderated (or they'd be sick of it); norms thata align with your friends are more likely to align at least somewhat with you; and if your friends are there, it's at least a somewhat-compatible local community! But of coures it doesn't have to be that way. I set up on blahaj.zone because I had seen some very thoughtful posts by the admins, wanted to experiment with Sharkey, and the one other person I followed here said something (I can't even remember wnat) that made me decide to check it out ... and a year later, I'm still here and recommending it to others!
And agreed on the problem of people judging the fediverse by mastodon.social. But, according to fedidb, it's now 30% of active mastodon active users - up from maybe 20% in late 2022. And over the last 18 months or so, there have been almost 1,000,000 new acounts on .social ... while the total number of Mastodon accounts is roughly flat. So statistically, that's where most newcomers are like to form their impression of Mastodon.
