Anecdotal report on the ground speed abilities of a black bear.
I was driving this evening, just after dark on a dark stretch of road on the edge of town. I'm going about 40-50kph when I see a dark shape quickly appear out of the bush on the side of the road and into my lane about 20m in front of me. I slow to 30, but he is running (it's like watching a black hole whith legs he's so black) in front of me, then veers across the other lane and into the ditch on the other side and he's gone.
The entire encounter lasted maybe 10 seconds.The bear was never really in danger and never came closer than 10m from my car... but yet I barely slowed down.
So ya, bears are pretty fast when motivated!
