Serial ports are faster than ever, and brain-dead simple. So they are emminently hackable and useful. The parallel port is twice as good. For most applications they can accomplish what needs doing.
That VGA, on the other handโฆ well, actually, now I looked for it, there *is* a lot of monitors available, and - again - simple and low-bandwidth married to modern hardware can be fast.
That said, I cannot imagine using either. BUT LEAVE THE ETHERNET ALONE! It's mine, all mine...

Oh, and serial is, mmm, morely 75 years? something like that. RS-232 is 1960. Ethernet is 1980 (well, 1983 for 802.3), and VGA is the young pup - 1987.
