I get a real kick out of the predictable “Oh Noes the NDP are going to “force” an election — [that is literally scheduled by law to be no later than next fall] — and let the Conservatives win!”.

@chris I think there's things that are far more corrosive to democracy.
People assuming that they can just tune out or vote for (random other candidate), but that gridlock means the policies they like won't change.
News media that covers all politics as horse-races and kayfabe feuds, and never gets into the nuts and bolts of policy.
Voters holding out for an ideal candidate, rather than exercising their power strategically.

@fifilamoura @stephanie See, this is the part I really don't understand.
Why would he want that? It's Singh’s *job* to be elected, himself, as leader of the NDP and potentially future Prime Minister.
Is it more likely for him to be elected if the Liberal Party is high, or low, in the polls?
Right now, Singh could do nothing and Poillievre is very likely to get elected.
This decision doesn't make that any more likely, imo. But it does prove that SIngh still wants the chance to be Prime Minister himself, as is his job.

@npilon I don't disagree with any of those things, but I don't think it changes the fact that having one party in power for more than say 10 or 20 years is not good for democracy, and further, traditionally in Canada, the electorate gets tired of a party. The solution(s) remain(s) the same if we want to break that cycle.

… at least eventually. Trudeau has survived minority parliaments without a supply and confidence agreement, this doesn’t *necessarily* mean an early election, time will tell.
If I could make a dream come true it would be that LPC & NDP realize the status quo makes a CPC win frighteningly likely, and push one more electoral reform: a switch to a score-based rating vote that will help counteract vote splitting.

@chris I think understanding and addressing the source of the electorate getting "tired" of parties is more productive than trying to convince the electorate to adopt a wholly different voting strategy.

@DavidM_yeg @stephanie @fifilamoura @chris I hope that Singh isn’t stupid enough to force an early election. He will never have more power to affect change than he does in this minority parliament. I also hope they push through some kind of ranked ballot system.

@npilon I think it's probably a mix of all of the above.

Trudeau survived 1 minority government of less than 2 years. This minority government will have lasted 3 years as of September 10, 2nd only to a Mackenzie King minority that lasted over 3 1/2 years 100 years ago.
Without the supply and confidence agreement in place, the Liberals will be cautious for the next year to try and avoid the risk of a no-confidence vote. Don’t expect too many new bills.

@chris one other thing: whether or not people are willing to vote for a party depends a *lot* on the behavior of that party's politicians - whether they're perceived as trustworthy, serious, and effective.
So great, I do actually agree with you, I think our democracy would be healthier if we had other gov'ts as realistic outcomes.
I cannot see dramatically ripping up a deal that the other party was upholding as helping the perceived behavior of the NDP. I think this sets us back.

I agree.
Having done a fair bit of reading on the subject, a score based approval vote is probably better than a ranked vote, but ANYTHING is better than another FPTP plurality vote. -

@fifilamoura @stephanie @chris It's certainly nerve-wracking to consider the CPC forming government. An election is scary for those of us who will suffer impacts on the rights of loved ones, if that happens. However, there might not be a better opportunity for the NDP to rise than now. Poilievre's popularity has started to dip (folks are clueing in to PP's fakery) and people are clueing in to corporate gouging. I'm scared but I can see the logic in NDP making a move, now.

@npilon Ah... but if there were no drama, would it be rightly called Politics? :+)
