wrote last edited by [email protected]They just ran a short news story about impacts of tariffs on Atlantic Canada and it dawned on me.
This could be the end of our paper mill in #PortAlberni.
It is the last one on VI that has operated continuously without significant curtailment since the 1950s. It was one of 4 huge paper operations.
It is owned by Domtar and Paper Excellence. Last I heard it sells all its paper to the USA.

The Premier said he believes the biggest impact to his province will be the fishery. Then oil and gas. But he emphasized the supporting sectors. Will a whole fishing season be lost? #canpoli #trumptariffs #cdnpoli

@chris There's a whole world out there besides the US - they can't find another market?

Most of the crab is processed - tinned or frozen. The questions are: processed **where**? by **whom**? who owns the compan(y/ies)?
Once it is processed into a long-shelf product, then one can talk about the tariffs. But remember - the producer is not paying the tariff. The **importer**/buyer in the US is paying it.
And they pass it on to the consumer, who either pays it, or decides some other delicacy is preferable.

The nice thing is: the market for the crab is much larger than the supply. This product *will* sell.
The bad thing is: the luxury market for live crab is the most lucrative. And for the USA, this market may shrink. And more of the crab will be processed than consumed live.
The sad thing is: much of that luxury market infrastructure is US jobs and companies. This will hit the US workers more than Canadian.

Aren’t those mills in long term contracts with specific publishers?
My recollection is that’s what insulated them from some previous shocks due to tariffs or a higher Canadian dollar.

@chris Should Canadians now cancel all their US streaming services? My family doesn’t want me to do it but I think we have to.

@lenlayton not a terrible idea. I will definitely not be using Amazon!

@AlsoPaisleyCat I don’t see why any of those contracts would be protected.

#PortAlberni #canpoli #cbc #cdnpoli #publicbroadcaster #cdnpoli #uspoli #usa #canada #trumptariffs@chris 25%'s the floor, too, since the White House has said they'll raise them further if Canada or Mexico responds in any way. So that's going to be a thing in an hour and a half.
-
@AlsoPaisleyCat I don’t see why any of those contracts would be protected.
It’s standard practice in long term supply contracts internationally.
Newspapers and other publishers don’t want their base costs to vary so they lock in a fixed long term price and then use long term foreign currency hedge tools to avoid that risk.
At one point, most of the major paper mills were contracted to one major US newspaper or another. Print media overall has declined severely but the fact that they’ve survived so long indicates they have secured contracts for a significant part of their business.
In this case, the buyer will take the hit because they are required to buy a fixed amount at a fixed price. The tariffs will be on top of that unless there was some specific provision for a tariff in violation of the CUSMA which would be unlikely.
