@mia The monetary system of course isn't good in any shape or form right now. At least with GNU Taler there's a solution to the processing part on the horizon, even though it ain't here yet.
So given projects are registered at Liberapay it seems more of a UI/UX matter then. The barrier towards donating to the very projects you're using stuff from should be as low as possible in my opinion. @Nicro I didn't specifically thought about details, it was a mere interesting thought. 🤭

@Natanox @Nicro yeah. given AppStream metadata it’s pretty easy for a DE to have a “give back to the community” screen with donation links. think that’s basically good enough. any further integration (e.g. with provider APIs) doesn’t seem like a good idea to me, even if it’d make things more convenient, because it’d incentivize projects to all move to what is in all likelihood going to be just a single provider.

@mia @Nicro To have it also user-friendly you'd have to include multiple payment providers in a "Donation Portal" then, so projects can define one and users may connect to multiple accounts. Would probably end up with 4 big ones (Taler, Paypal, Liberapay, Patreon).
Right now we got the donation buttons in the software stores / managers of course, however that way essential projects like curl are invisible. Also both people and projects would vastly benefit from predictable, organized payments.

@mia @Nicro Perhaps this general idea is something to pitch to @kde and @gnome (or rather @flathub ?) given their current work on introducing payment options in the Flatpak ecosystem.
Including a way to donate to all your open projects in a way described above once/regularly would be a great stretch goal!
