@[email protected] Isn't IFTAS tbs aligned? So... let me get this straight
https://wedistribute.org/2024/09/social-web-foundation-launch/
We have: Meta, Automattic (both known to host bigots who go out doxxing, harassing people for YEARS unend such as Libs of Tiktok), IFTAS which https://about.iftas.org/ believes in TBS (I am neutral on TBS but I raise concerns regarding recent meta and the fact that queer voices were literally silenced from the platform)... So... Let's see what they propose:There’s a real and pressing need to help people engage with their networks, stay up to date, follow hashtags and relays, and finding friends across the network.
(tracking relations across the fediverse, including individual users)Most of their work will initially focus on protocol extensions that they hope will benefit the community. In Evan’s own words:
(implementing protocol extensions to support this and their goals of making the fediverse safe)Fediverse Enhancement Proposals are kind of a standardization process. We may do submissions for FEPs. If an idea comes in one of our workshops or through our supporters and members, we would start through a FEP.
you know, I love how my idea of a "admin cooperative" that provided shared resources such as guides for optimizing your instance, some help for technical support, server hosting (where to find it, pricing etc) and some legal advice (that was drafted up by lawyers out of pocket) is considered a council trying to take over the fediverse but a bunch of international, multi billion dollar corporations coming together to buy themselves a position on W3C's board to propose FEPs in order to force the network into their vision is something to be celebrated. I'm fucking done this is stupid I'm going back to work fuck this -
@[email protected] @[email protected] this just looks like yet another stupid, wasteful, useless corporate promise to "expand the social web" as they've been doing for the last few years
We've got:
- Generic promises about "improving the social web"
- Project ideas with zero results being shown as if they had any actual work behind them whatsoever
- Minimalist, professional site with sans-serif font
- lots of companies with wildly different industries and motives marked as "sponsors" without any explanation
- headed by some famous people
- "[ActivityPub] has attracted over 100 software implementations" (are these 100 software implementations in the room with us right now?)
- the inevitable quotes section -
@[email protected] @[email protected] I hope to god this does not take off because if it does the result is not going to be pretty and anyone currently up and arms about "LLCs on the fediverse" is going to get a rude awakening when advertisers are drawn towards the space because of VC funds going into making the network a corporate friendly space.

@[email protected] @[email protected] we've seen this a million times before and we'll see it again, i don't believe we need to worry too much
this place is not dying, it's already dead. the meager caves we carve out of our little corner of the Fediverse might as well be an independent social media network, given how the rest of "open social" looks like -
@[email protected] @[email protected] I don’t want to fucking wall off from the rest of the network anymore than I already have. This sucks. As much as people give me shit for operating a larger instance that needs legal protection, I still fucking federate with most of the fediverse except some extreme actors. Threads is literally this horrible mix of allowlist federation. I’m fucking SICK and TIRED of being ran out of my spaces due to corporate greed. First Reddit (well the writing was on the wall I just needed something to force me off), Tumblr at the same time (I moved to tumblr as Matt got worse but believe me it was still fucking awful before), thank god I was never on Twitter, countless technical forums such as stack overflow. Enough is enough I’m sick of having to move everything over to a new platform time and time again I wanted fedi to be different. I’m sick of being chased off of things, from services I use jacking up pricing, going to a subscription based model deprecating perpetual licenses. There’s no fucking escape
