One of Misskey's best features is the user drive functionality. The ability to manage uploads directly therein, like a form of cloud storage, and to reutilize already-uploaded files in subsequent posts, meaning no file duplication.

@adiz What is the benefit of keeping it on the server? The media collection can be stored on device as well, for me that makes more sense.
Duplication is not a problem in Mitra because files in storage are addressed by hashes.

@silverpill @adiz so if i upload the same file multiple times, it's not stored multiple times?

@mischievoustomato @adiz Yes, the file name has format
<sha256-hash>.<extension>
When identical file is uploaded, the file name would also be identical.

@silverpill @mischievoustomato @adiz Wouldn't it make more sense to store a perceptual hash for pictures?
-
@slipgate @mischievoustomato @adiz Probably not. I assume that with perceptual hashes you can't store different resolutions of the same image.
