[Allegedly] [...] Meta is delaying Fediverse support for European Union Threads users due to the Digital Markets Act, which (for better or worse) complicates launching new technologies within the European Market for non-European companies.

@rolle its GDPR.
Their employees have said such things on their profiles when it's discussed.️
I definitely see why it could be problematic. EU tends to "not fuck around" when it comes to GDPR and making sure data deletion requests are adhered to.
Threads is legally obligated to ensure the deletion of data that's requested for deletion and they can't possibly ensure that with Fediverse platforms like Pleroma having MRF policies to deny delete requests...️

No, this is different and is a major issue for Foss project within the EU. Been hearing about it a lot from the Linux podcast I listen to.
It basically makes it so Tech companies are liable for anything that happens on their platforms or any security breaches attributed to their software. And for Meta or even projects providing key libraries and programs for Linux this could be bad.

@rolle Serious question: are ppl really using threads actively? I remember it taking off initially, then dying (in terms of active users) fairly quickly.

@justinf @rolle depends on if algorithms feeding you posts that you're completely uninterested in, is worth it to you.
That's pretty much the only big difference besides the amount of people to engage with.
It's still very hard to get actual engagement on your own posts unless you're talking to the algorithm.
I prefer to talk to people, not the algorithm. That's why I'm here and will stay here until Mastodon eventually completely takes over. Then I'm out. But I'm here till then.

The EU are quite pro-FOSS so I do have my doubts about that generalization. Might @echo_pbreyer have any insight perhaps?

@echo_pbreyer @[email protected] @CWSmith @rolle I have discussed it with employees and they've said GDPR specifically️
It could be several things at the same time though.
