As a Dutch person, I am appalled.
„The deputy chief of the defence staff, Lt Gen Doug Chalmers […] told [Prime minister Boris] Johnson it would be difficult to carry out the mission undetected, meaning the UK would “have to explain why we are effectively invading a longstanding Nato ally”.
Add another 10 years to the timeline of the UK even starting negotiations on EU membership.

Former prime minister admits in extract from forthcoming book that he discussed possible aquatic operation at height of pandemic

@jwildeboer appalled and shocked at this revelation. Johnson was a pathetic man child with no grip on reality. His disastrous premiership, and hubristic Brexit debacle has cost this country £200bn and counting and it's standing in Europe and the world.
Totally ashamed.

@Waxingtonknee I am not shocked by Boris bragging about this. What shocks me is that the British forces seriously considered this option and actively worked on plans to implement it.

@jwildeboer but hey, the audacity of Boris Johnson to bring this in his book - he doesn't seem to consider any trouble, he wants scandal. In his eyes, everything to make money off is okay.

@energisch_ That’s not the part that shocks me. What did shock me is that the British forces seriously considered this and spent time and money on exploring plans.

@jwildeboer @Waxingtonknee To be fair, if the Prime Minister instructs his military officials to do something, they are obliged to seriously consider it. The decision is always in the hands of the elected politicians -- as it should be.

@Paul @Waxingtonknee A system that works as long as the politicians act rational. But with irrational or authoritarian politicians, it can turn very dark, very fast. That’s why (in most democratic countries) the military can refuse orders that violate fundamental rights or are unconstitutional. Exactly to limit the authoritarian/irrational scenario.

@jwildeboer I do wish the Guardian would do a little journalism and publish some supporting evidence for all this otherwise unsubstantiated material quoted from a known liars autobiography.

@hembrow @jwildeboer One must assume this revelation (both infuriating AND embarrassing, like wtf) is strategic.

@jwildeboer It is always good to assume that when Johnson says anything self serving he is lying and that is highly likely in this case b
