About the empty timeline, there should be follow suggestions appearing automatically when you first sign up, are you not seeing them?

A lot of the other stuff people find confusing is due to the different structure of Mastodon and the Fediverse, and there are important reasons for this structure (https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers/).

It would be a lot easier and more convenient to all be on one server as other networks do, but that would allow Musk scenarios to happen etc.
