Why did Trump regain the presidency, Jason Sattler asks? He turns to a recent podcast of Andrea Pitzer for an answer (the podcast is embedded in the posting linked below):
"How did we get Donald Trump?
Propaganda works. That’s it. …
Incessant propaganda works, primarily when funded by extremely wealthy people seeking the plunder that comes from dividing people."

/1Here's how Trump won
Propaganda works. And when it's backed by extraordinarily wealthy men consumed with power, it can lead to familiar horrors.

What Robert Reich has to say today links thematically to Andrea Pitzer's analysis (see /1) of how Trump won. As Reich says, we've learned a bitter lesson – that we cannot turn to many corporate media sources – "which mostly answer to corporate or billionaire ownership" – as we seek truth.

/2Where to find the truth?
As we enter the darkness of the Trump regime, it’s more important than ever that we have access to the truth

Reich points in particular to New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times.
Reich concludes,
"As we enter the darkness of the Trump regime, please make sure you and others you know have access to accurate information about what’s occurring."

And:
"Here are the sources I currently rely on for the truth: The Guardian, Democracy Now, Business Insider, The New Yorker, The American Prospect, Americans for Tax Fairness, The Economic Policy Institute, The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, ProPublica, Labor Notes, The Lever, Popular Information, Heather Cox Richardson, and, of course, this Substack."
Reich's posting has links for these sources.

"While all eyes are on Trump, we must remember that he is merely a tool and a vessel. And what he does in the United States on behalf of his far-right network of billionaire donors is just the beginning.
We are watching in real-time as the vested interests that brought Trump back into the White House attempt to replace the American republic with a new form of postmodern networked fascism."

"Project 2025’s support from 100 of the country’s most influential conservative organisations illustrates that this pernicious Alt Reich ideology has penetrated the centre ground of US conservativism.
But it would be a huge mistake to believe that Project 2025 is just about America. It is seen as an inspiration for far-right movements all over the world."
Many of us have no idea how quickly the iron curtain can slam down.

@wdlindsy Dear U.K. subjects, please pay attention, that human excrement Farage would bring this vile shit here given even half a fucking chance!

@wdlindsy He’s a tool all right, and instrumental in permanently killing off the republic.

Not the first step.
Not by a long way. -

This is now the conventional wisdom, but...
Exit polls showed a lot of people struggling economically and blaming the current administration.
Voters are plenty fickle.
This narrow win by Trump may be like the dog that caught the bus if he (1) does tariffs, (2) does mass deportation, and (3) gives the rich more tax breaks.

@wdlindsy
I have been wondering since the Ronald Reagan years when the lower economic classes would reach their stress limit and snap back, or alternatively how oligarchs would continue to maintain control. We are seeing the answers to that question, today. But I am shocked that their strategies are no longer even well-disguised. -

@JosephMeyer I'm not holding my breath until working-class voters who placed Trump in office begin to admit they made a horrific choice, when his economic policies immiserate them even more.

@Structuralist Exit polls showed a lot of people stating that they were struggling economically.
It's easy to state a lot of things, including counterfactual ones.
Surprisingly, a large percentage of those economically struggling Trump voters now find that they have magically enjoyed immediate economic betterment, and are reporting that.
