"But Americans rallied and threw their hearts into the cause on the battlefields even as they continued to work on the home front for a government that defended democracy and equality before the law.
And in 1865, at least, they won.
Happy Thanksgiving."

@wdlindsy Abe's Proclamation was in 1863 and we were in the middle of the Civil War. I thank Abe, Dean Obeidallah and William Lindsey for reminding America of the crucial time we are now in. And that we must stick together to defeat Trump in his Civil War. Also want to encourage "Americans: Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Naturalized Americans, POC, White & Asian, one and all to #sticktogether
Love to all who support our American Democracy!!!

"Abraham Lincoln proclaimed 'a National Day of Thanksgiving and Praise' as an antidote to the family-against-family violence that raged in his country. Privately, he cited [Sarah Josepha] Hale’s request [that a national day of thanksgiving be declared] as central to his decision."

"If you chose to celebrate with people who voted against you, I wish you peace and ease and comfort to endure the day. Maybe you’ll have a breakthrough conversation, something you can share that will help us come together. That’s my Thanksgiving wish for you.
If your celebration is reduced or lonesome because of political chasms, I send you unending stores of love and empathy. I know exactly how you feel. I see you, and I applaud your strength."

"If you are observing with a new group of likeminded people, know that family isn’t blood or shared DNA. My family are those who see me, listen to me, and treat me with respect. They honor my boundaries and cheer my successes. They think about how their choices impact others as much as they consider themselves and their needs. You will never go wrong to build a family upon such a foundation."

@wdlindsy I’m sorry, some of you are considering remaining FRIENDS with fascists who have repeatedly, for years, proclaimed their love for fascism and hate for anyone not like them? What is wrong with americans?

@wdlindsy I've added this to a list of posts that I re-boost from time to time. You aren't paranoid - you're seeing the truth for what it really is. MAGAs are flat out dangerous and untrustworthy. Besides, they carry communicable diseases because they don't get vaxxed, they don't mask up, they don't social distance. Separating from them is the smartest thing the rest of us can possibly do.

@wdlindsy Wahlverwandtschaften (elective relationships*)—a better German concept than the Nazi ones our MAGA antagonists like Stephen Miller seem so determined to resurrect. It’s said that you can’t choose your family, but I’m among the many who are living proof that yes, you can. In my case, it was the only way to retain my sanity. If you have MAGA relatives, I’d highly recommend it.
*usually translated as “Elective Affinities” from its origins in chemical nomenclature and Goethe’s novel.

Aaron Hughey congratulates Donald Trump for showing us Americans exactly who we are. These are words that resonate on the Thanksgiving holiday, when many of us are accustomed to patting ourselves on a back and pretending we're a nation specially chosen and blessed by God, a city on a hill, shining with innocence and goodness.
Hughey writes,

"Prior to the election I bet many readers saw America as a shining city on a hill, as Ronald Reagan so eloquently put it a few years ago. Now we know that’s not the case. We are just as susceptible to being seduced by a corrupt, power-hungry, narcissistic, wannabe dictator as any other Third World country.
Again, congratulations to Trump for exposing the cold, hard truth about who we are."

"There is no American Exceptionalism; we are not immune from evil, anti-democratic authoritarian leaders with fascist tendencies.
So let’s stop pretending we’re something we’re not."
We're a nation where law blatantly does not apply to well-heeled straight white men in the way it applies to everyone else. And the rest of us had better not forget this, or we'll be taught a rude lesson in who has power and who does not.
